Recommended Startup Business for 2015

The U.S. based business magazine “Inc” release the result of their interview about best 8 business sector in 2015.

http://www.inc.com/graham-winfrey/best-industries-2015-the-best-industries-for-starting-a-business-in-2015.html

Their choice of best 8 businesses are as below.

  • Fantasy Sport Services (Online Sports Games)
  • Gamification Services
  • Relaxation Beverages (Opposite of energy kinda drinks)
  • Yoga and Pilates
  • Legal Marijuana
  • Food E-commerce
  • Public-Sector Technology
  • Agriculture Software

Needless to say that AGRIBUDDY which HUGS is working on current days is Agricultural Software. And not only it’s an agricultural software but, I say, it’s one step in front of being regular software as the system is aiming for “the users in under developed countries where hasn’t cultivated (As a business)”. Since we are considering that gamification of the system is important factor for our system to let the users enjoy the system, AGRIBUDDY is covering two sectors in above, gamification and agriculture software.

When I and Jiro (My partner) moved to Cambodia, it was just before the country get attention as business field. So, even though I was quite excited to say “I will be doing business in Cambodia”, no one really listened and general view of Japanese toward Cambodia was that Cambodia is the place to do volunteering, not a place to make money. However, now I am quite sure our feeling of “Cambodia will ignite” was correct as I see number of TV programs are featuring Cambodia and tons of business people are rushing in here now a days.

I decided to challenge in Cambodia with macro scale agriculture business because I was seeing a strong potential in the sector where most of business people won’t touch. I was thinking from the beginning that mixing agriculture and IT and finance will be a big business soon. Why I thought like that has no magic behind. In fact, it is very simple that there won’t be a business that doesn’t need IT and finance solution but, only in agriculture sector, there aren’t any of solution involving in yet.

Unfortunately, doing agriculture in under developed country is such a survival and are not able to get a result easily. However because of difficulties, I now could see which part we need IT solution the most or how to add financial service into where. Thanks for that I am getting vast amount to datas and experience. And the AGRIBUDDY is the things that I concentrated all of my past experience and time in Cambodia, I feel that is it a great timing as the world is becoming more aware of ITed agriculture business and I am feeling a leading wind finally.

Beside the Inc’s article this time, Google’s director Eric Shmit as well established agriculture start up project called Farm2050. It was a big news as well.

There are numerous numbers of problems which entrepreneurs need to tackle on. However, 90% of entrepreneurs are concentrate on 10% of such problems and agricultures isn’t included into that 10% even thought, we will be needing to produce 70% more of food as our population increase to 10 billion in 2050. When the interests of entrepreneurs spread into the subject that are really important, the number of technology related organisation increase to 100 to 1,000 times more than now. The project were established based on such thought and to support entrepreneurs who go on the business which mixed agriculture and IT tech.

As Inc article suggest, as Monsanto, notorious agricultural giant, bought out agriculture start up company with $800 million, it is now known that possibility of exiting with large price as well may being a cause to attract venture capitals or investors. Anyways, getting eyes of investors will ease the entrepreneurs to fund them and it means that more of start up will be established.

Cambodia and IT with agriculture and startups. When I begin our business, there were no wind at all but now I can feel the wind blowing for sure. I must grab this wind and ride on the big wave to produce a result that give a big impact to the world.

Absurd death

Two Japanese were killed by “Islamic cult” group called ISIS who seems like to severely exasperate their grade 2 syndrome (Someone who behave like students). The incident happened to be the opportunity for me to know that there are various people and ideas in Japan. The ransom of 200 million USD the group suggested seems full throttle on grade 2 syndrome but some opinions of my Japanese people such as “we should pay, it is only 20 million” or “It’s PM Abe’s fault. Because he gave an interview in front of Israel flag and it made the ISIS angry” were quite surprising to me.

It of course was very sad and regrettable outcome that two of them were kidnapped and killed. And I wanted to rescue them if it was possible. However without being just sentimental and see the reality, we realise that people who had absurd death aren’t just only them.

We all die one day. I think having your loved ones around at the time of your death can be considered acceptable “peaceful death”. But there always certain amount of people who encounter sudden and unwanted death. Cause can be from something like traffic accident or incurable disease that we can expect to happen right next to us to something like an air raid or stabbing by passing maniac which can sound very unreasonable.

There aren’t any big or small in someone’s life. But for example, the death of 10 years old girl in Fukuoka who were killed by 46 years old suspect, boyfriend of her mother, are the incident that should not be happening more than the incident by ISIS, I think. It isn’t the logic of “it’s his responsibility because Goto went to the war zone with his own will, so he should be killed”. But the logic on the difference of the possibility of them to avoid that the risk of their death. It is quite different to hear someone say “I am going to war zone” and “I am going to school”. The possibility of the danger they can expect after their departure of the day has a big difference.

Well, of course both of their lives are equally and extremely important and precious. What I think is that it should be considered as serious issue that in Japan, the country where suppose to have the highest level of security, has such a crime of the girl just leaving her house for school and then killed. This should not be happening. But people who scream for world peace don’t even look at this crime and only focusing on a killing incidence that had happened in the middle of war zone. It is quite strange to me.

Anyway, losing the lives of 2 people were painful result, however I support the decision of current Japanese government of not paying ransom or not to put a pressure on Jordan to release the death law inmate despite heavy criticism from Japanese citizens. Unfortunately majority of people in this world are low in education and unable to think things logically then act with immediate intention. If they learn that they can gain huge ransom by kidnapping Japanese, or can release their people from prison, then it could have been lead to the habitual situation of any Japanese are easy bulls eye for all crime groups.

But, it would be the best if one day whole world will be safe enough for anyone to visit though…

Our jobs are disappearing.

People are start buzzing about that some of jobs we have now will disappear in near future of 2020 to 2030. Yup. I think it’s inevitable. Not talking about future but even if we look back our near past, many types of jobs are deleted since computer is introduced to our life. The speed of such shift must be escalated and some new types will be born but at the same time then the types of jobs that can be taken over by computer or machines will be eliminated very soon.

On the other day, I was totally surprised by that translation gadget we now have in our phone. I was expecting some gadget to understand my Japanese and then convert them into data, and then translate them to other languages. It’s what I were already expecting. However when my android recognises my English and then convert them into data just surprised me. I remember that Siri in IPhone 4S can recognise U.S. English and British English, and Aussie English separately but then when my friend from U.S. talked to British English version of Siri, it could not understand much of what he was saying. Of course my English were not listened by Siri at all and made me feel that I will never speak any English ever in my life.

In our real life, it won’t be happening if British and American talk in English then not able to understand each other. People understand me even with my English. It was not possible last time but Google translation has over came that difficulty only in a year and now it can recognise most of English by itself.

When you do not understand what another is saying at all, this function can flourish its power the most. For example, when you want to someone to understand what you want them to understand, you can try to speak some words on a guide book and most often the person gets what you are trying to say. Then a difficulty arises when the another understood what you say then they answer to you. You asked but you do not understand the answer they are giving you. This completely one direction conversation does not work as communication at all. When such situation has occurred, I can pull out this gadget and be able to let it translate is such a evolution. Even some grammars are wrong, it doesn’t matter. It still is great improvement from not to be able to understand at all to be able to communicate.

And if such function is so easy to use and available to everyone, more people uses more frequently and more lively and fresh datas can be compiled and it speeds up the evolution of the system. I think this is a breakthrough for this type of gadget and now we are literally in the era of “Devil’s tongue translator” (There is such a gadget in Japanese Sci-fi comic called Doraemon. One of his super gadget is that if you eat the devil’s tongue, you will be able to speak any language you want).

It can be possible that such translator gadget will soon have much improved function and when you are able to speak only few words in another language, the gadget catch up with your study and it might work better than you learn new language. It may allow you to speak to anyone from English to French to Thai, anyone. Of course I understand that studying language (Comprehend) and just simply to be able to communicate is totally different stories. So if you are learning new language, you should keep studying.

Well but anyway, language teachers or translator job will be difficult to survive unless they can do good branding for their work and have a proven good skills. I was going to write that farmer’s job as well disappear soon but I guess you might be getting bored with my long writing so I will post it on my next blog!

Safety box is gone

While I was away from Siem Reap with business trip, incident happened in my office.

A safety box with cash inside which was placed in the locked drawer of our accounting room of our office were stolen in broad daylight. Our office is regular house. So if someone from outside try to steal it, the person have to open heavy metal entrance gate and open the big wooden door of our office then have to go in to accounting room and then identify the drawer and unlock it, then take the cash box which happened to have lots of cash inside on the day. I say, only Arsene Lupin can pull this trick off.

The circumstance unfortunately said that it was an inside job. Since we only have 10 staffs in the office, the thief should have known that we will find out who did it.

And so, there were one female staff who suppose to resign on the next day of the incidence. And as my staff reported me that her reaction before the incidence surfaces were clearly odd and immediately after they found out that safe was gone, everyone pointed their fingers at her and accused her directly by saying “You did it, didn’t you!”. Haha.

But of course she denied and they decided to call a police. Calling a police in Cambodia means to cost extra money. It will be the same if you call fire fighters or judge/court. If you try to solve a problem and let public officials involve, it costs you “a lot” in here. Because of that, most of Cambodians try to solve problem by themselves.

Well, anyways. With their investigation, she confessed at police station. Apparently, she had sent the money to one of her account from her another account via WING (Money transfer system in Cambodia like Western Union thing). It was the evidence to close the case.

The incident costed for our time and energy and left bad taste in our mouth but we retrieved the money at the end. That was very good outcome. And my staff being able to solve the incidence by themselves while I was gone was another very good outcome in this bad experience.

The girl who stole money called me and said “I did it with impulse I’m sorry. Forgive me please. But I can not cover the fee to pay to police so, why don’t your company pay for it?”. …Let me just say, why in the hell the company need to pay? She was preparing copied key for the drawer. It can not be an impulse incident. But since explaining it to her is only a waste of time, we just ask her to sell her motorbike.

If I let someone go to market, they say “I lost the money” or “I get robbed” or “I got cheated for change” and if I let someone control a farm, they say “I don’t know what happened but thief came and stole”. Or they once told me water of our fish pond dried up and fish disappear with it. …Well, magical things keep happening in here but I say that this is only a piece of a reality of doing business in developing country. So, I got to deal with it.

Bits and pieces about Cambodia

Well, what can I say but in Cambodia, I very often encounter the sceneries that takes my breath away.IMG_9905

Of course very much often it takes my breath away with another reason as well. Such as the site like this “low-rider-van-with-heavy-load-of-eggs-driving-bumpy road”. As they load more eggs, it lower the van and there will be more broken eggs. You see this great logic?

995019_710763005608547_2136211748_n

Well but anyway. Life in Siem Reap of course is different as a life in Japan or U.S. where you can have anything you want. But living in the place where world heritage monuments are scattered around my house is actually quite valuable.

IMG_0027

I can visit Angkor wat ruins with inexpensive but great tasted red wine and foie gras that I buy from a french restaurant close to my house and on the way to there, I see gorgeous site of rice terrace with sun shining down. Then I say to myself “how beautiful Cambodia today as well” then I go back to my house seeing magnificent sunset view. I don’t know what you say but I can say this life is “very rich” in a different level as we live in Tokyo or New york or Paris.

Sometime people ask me if I’m ever going back to Japan or live in Cambodia rest of my life. But in fact, I have no idea. I don’t think I will live in Cambodia for good. However I don’t think I’m going back to Japan either. Ideally I will be living in the new place where I can feel new level of “rich”ness that are different as I felt in Japan or Cambodia.

Um… but for now I just want that wine and cheese picnic basket I saw on Amazon.

Agriculture is sizzling!

This is the article my friend Kazu, CEO of Framgia, posted on his facebook “Why an agriculture that is decreasing in Japan is considered as growing industry in the world?”

http://blogos.com/outline/102779/ (The source is from Economist magazine)

As I begin to have my eyes on agriculture and investment 3 years ago, I have given opportunities to do my presentation to people. To wrap my up presentation it says that the world population is estimated to reach 10 billion but farm land to produce food (Include to produce feed grains) for such population is decreasing each year. So, it means that some investing people are already going for the position to grab farm land. My presentation say basically like that. And some datas actually shows high return in farm land investment. For example the data below. It indicate the price of farm land and the shift of real estate price in the U.S.

(Top bars shows the shift of farm land price. Bars at down shows the shift of real estate price)
プロジェクター用ver..001

In last 10 years, notorious financial crisis that caused by burst of subprime loan in the U.S occurred and effected to the world. It traced overbrilliant downfall in the shift of real estate price. However, farm land price which as well was taking a part of financial bubble that thought to go down actually kept rising. Money goes to where money is. Because the price goes up, more purchase comes in, then it increases the price more. It not only happening in the U.S but also in South America and Africa and of course in Asia where I am currently in.

The tycoon Jim Rogers once said “Must purchase the farm where has rains and let the farmers who knows the job to work. If you do so, you can double the profit since a price of crop itself are increasing”. This is exactly why we came to Cambodia and find farm land then do agriculture. Well, but as I have been writing in my blog, it just isn’t that easy to do farming in developing country though.

However in these 3 years, I have learned a lot from my experience and feel that I now could latch onto the point where I can produce the result and to do so where I need to push. And I also can see what is fatally lacking as well. While I have been working my project, agriculture sector is getting more attention and more player is coming in. It I say just the best timing for us.

In this agricultural sector that shall be much more interesting from here, I want to set my motto that I will play with the highest technology In the place where the technology is the least developed.

Well, it is not that I’m just playing with my drone all the time. Hehe! But I do not deny that I most of the time enjoy and get excited with my project as kid plays his toy, but I just kinda want to change lame and old image of agriculture. Y’all know what I’m sayin?

Origin of AGRIBUDDY

We only have HUGS cooperate site till recently but as we spin off our company into separate companies (Well, it supposed to be separated long time ago, but it has been delayed big time with very “Cambodia like” problem we have gotten used to already), we build our own page.

https://www.facebook.com/hugsagrico

I am able to speak “Kanglish” (English with Kansai Japanese accent) and comprehend English with varieties of accent and read some easy English novel like Sidney Sheldon type. However, I am not good at writing an English at all. If I write some English sentence, google immediately gives them bunch of red alert lines and they can’t even find candidate word from my spelling. But our business is actually not really for Japanese but for global market. To let the world know what we do, English is the most convenient way thus far. But since I am bad at writing, I let Ms. Sayaka, bilingual staff of HUGS to update English version of this blog and operation of Facebook cooperate page. And this is the picture she posted on Facebook page the other day.

This map literally is the origin of AGRIBUDDY. The map measured with foot of our farm manager and drawn by their bear hands. By the way, each map shows our 100 hectares of land (The size of 2 Tokyo Disney Land). They measured that 2 of 100 hectares of land by walking around with 100 m maximum of tape measure and divide them into plots, then made it into these maps. If I look back now it was almost impossible even to ask them to make it into a map. I really appreciate that they made it for us. But I say that it haven’t change from our Edo era 200 years ago if we had to walk around and measured then make hand drawn map. Of course we were using GPS but no one really have enough skills to utilise the system fully.

Then now, we can have this perfect map like below by just walking around a farm with AGRIBUDDY installed smartphone.

10258016_1526214810966259_1016863154930419267_n

Well, our agriculture system all the sudden across 200 years of time (and space?) and touch the technology of current world! hooray! Then from here we have to be the one to lead the world of technology in agriculture. We have to evolve and give AGRIBUDDY a constant evolution. And we will change agriculture in developing countries by our hands.

Anyway, probably most of companies in Japan already have the last day of working in 2014 and preparing for 2015. Thank you all for your great support in 2014 and I strive on my work to receive your continuous support on 2015.

Let our 2015 to be the best year ever and wish you to stride more than ever!

Best wishes from Cambodia.

Thank you.

Wanted! Khmer – Japanese real time translation system

I saw a news today. “Most recent AI (Artificial Intelligence) make simultaneous interpretation possible on Skype”

http://wired.jp/2014/12/20/skype-used-ai/

This is really amazing. As the world of Sci-Fi movie becoming a reality, I have mixed feeling with an excitement and bit of a fear. Well, but it seems like they try with English and Spanish which have some affinity in each other at first. But this kind of function still generate very unnatural translation when it comes to, for example, English and Japanese that have quite different structures. Maybe this will be cleared by AI one day soon?

How about what I have been wanting? I have been wanting Khmer and Japanese translation system. Will my dream come true while I’m still alive? Someone say that Khmer might disappear before it will be able to translated to any language…well, it might be so.

The foundation of this real time interpretation service is that the function to be able to listen language correctly. And such function is quite accurate already with IPhone’s Siri or “OK Google” of Android. For example, English version of Siri can distinct British english and Aussie English, American English. And if my American friend talks to British English version of Siri, she doesn’t understand any. She is nonsensically accurate. haha! Of course when I talk to Siri, she ignores me to the point that I feel I will never speak any English word ever in my life.

If it is real human conversation, such situation that American talks with British and not able to understand at all won’t happen. Even my English with strong accent, most people can hear and understand. By the way, I speak English with accent but my Japanese as well with accent from Kansai, it is like a southern accent of Japanese. I was living in Tokyo for 2 years before I come to Cambodia but I could not speak Kanto accent Japanese because I was embarrassed somehow. Speaking in Kanto accent (Regular Japanese) is higher wall for me than singing a song in soprano or something. However, very unfortunately I have to master Kanto accent for the computer interpreter to understand what I want to say.

So, it means that Kanto accent Japanese that I never were forced to speak, is now forced on me. And I have to do it for computer. What is this? Computer is getting closer to human or we are required to be close to computer? What do you think?

In near future, AI will take over humans and our world expect to be like Sci-fi movie. But it seems like we, humans, are doing a favor for computer already. Us, humans can live in Cambodia, where is my current residence with frequent power outage but computer server room must be air conditioned I guess. Even though, most of place on earth do not even have air conditioner.

Masayoshi Son of Soft Bank said that computer will catch up with our brain in 2018. Number of transistors in one computer chip will be 30 billion. It is the same amount with brain cells of human.  I think this will be real one day. At that time can we distinguish someone you are talking to is human or AI? Well, if I start pondering something like this, I can see our future will be just like Matrix movie. Can’t wait, can we?

Farmlogs has raised $10 million

Agriculture operation support service FarmLogs, the company that AGRIBUDDY sees as its benchmark, just succeeded to raise $10 million in round B as they were financed $4 million in round A in last year.

http://m.jp.techcrunch.com/2014/12/18/20141217farmlogs-nabs-10m-series-b-from-sv-angel-sam-altman-and-others/

Well, I don’t know how much shares they divided in this finance but probably around 10%? It means that the valuation of around $100 million, I guess? It is a great achievement  anyway. I say this is such a huge wave for us who develop AGRIBUDDY and I am very happy to know that my estimation that this kind of agricultural related service can receive appropriate appraisal from society and can have over $100 million valuation at the 1st round of finance. It proves that what I was thinking was not just a delusion because it is actually happened.

Target market of Farmlogs are farmers in U.S. where agriculture has been “ITed” (or “ITlised” I should say?) slowly and they reaches to the demographic who have stable access to internet and a computer or smartphones. On the other hand our AGRIBUDDY tries to reach to the farmers who owns smartphones and reside in the area with internet lines but never connect to the world of internet and do not even have a google account. (Let’s say they do not even know what’s google).

Everyday, we are showing and introducing our AGRIBUDDY in suburbs of Cambodia. And each time I have this absolute feeling that we are “the first creature that let them, the locals, connect to the world of internet”. Spreading the service we have created to the people who no one ever reached is of course extremely difficult task with long shot but the fruits we can harvest from it must be unbelievably delicious. And it will be proven very soon.

Well, let’s get to work!

They will be a meat eater.

In the last article, I wrote “If people in poverty start being rich, they begin to eat meat”. And then I wrote that to produce the meat for those, we need significant amount of feed grain. Means that our meat eating diet is sustained by that extremely inefficient luxury. This time I will go bit deeper about the issue.

In EU, average meat consumption is 70 kg per person. To produce this 70 kg of meat, we need 420 sq meters of grain farm. It is the same size as 1 basketball court.
スクリーンショット 2014-12-06 10.54.33 AM

Every year, people in EU consume a meat which ate one basket ball court of grain feed. And we, an Asians, eat average of 27 kg of meat. It needs 160 sq meters of grain farm to produce grain feed. It means that we use 160 sq meter land for 3.6 billion people to produce a grain feed. How big is that then? It is the size of combining France and Belgium together.

スクリーンショット 2014-12-06 11.04.08 AM

Then as I wrote, if the population of Asian region exploded to 4.5 billion and they become rich enough to eat meat, their average meat consumption shall be around 35 kg. Of course then we need more land to produce feed grains you know. It will be around the size of Japan.

Well, even if we, the people in developed countries, think that “Ok. I ate enough eat meat in my life, so, we should reduce it for our health!”. Since we won’t be able to force that to people in developing countries, we have to increase the produce of feed grain somehow to sustain a demand.

Why I see the potential in developing countries such as Cambodia, it is because they probably can take such demand. The countries has factors like low in harvest yield, cheap labor cost and vast uncultivated land. In this land, I have been trying from cultivation of land to produce of crops and then to logistics and more over, I tried production of feed grain and even production of meat. Let me tell you that I am having straight loss because of tons of unexpected problems and events. Yes I know. Thank you. But now I could feel that I know how I should play with those.

Now I see what I was envision when I come to Cambodia and start agriculture 3 years ago. Cambodian people around me begins to eat meat more and more. Price of pork is increasing, import of meat cow is getting active, foreign organisation that do mass cattle husbandry is stepping into Cambodia. I think increasing an efficiency of agriculture itself is the only way to sustain such dramatical and significant change in food culture.

And in my country Japan where most of feed grain are imported, what is going to happen with this sharp depreciation of yen? They will never be able to eat a meat the price we had been eating…
